Salute to San Diego

————The Kissing Soldier——-
————-The USS Midway———-

Coming back from the Pacific and hearing the good news that WW2 has ended, George Mendonsa, a US Navy sailor, grabbed and kissed Greta Friedman, a dental assistant in a nurse’s uniform, in Times Square, New York.

Captured in photo by Alfred Eisenstaedt and published in Life magazine, two strangers kissing in a moment of jubilation became the iconic symbol of celebration for the safe return of our brave men and women.

San Diego has the highest number of active and retired military personnel in the world. Walter and I checked out the many military symbols in the city.

At Seaport Village, you will find the Bob Hope Memorial and the battleship Midway where no life was ever lost. Every soldier who served on the Midway came back home.
